  • Takes minutes to make: Just whisk and dunk!
  • Custom blend of spices: Adept seasoning like paprika and cayenne adds depth that other versions lack.

  • Pickle twist: A splash of brine adds complexity you won’t get from plain mayo or ketchup alone.

Fry Sauce Recipe Ingredients

Let’s take a closer look at what you need to make this recipe (measurements in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post):

  • Mayonnaise: The rich, creamy base that holds the sauce together—use full-fat, whole-egg mayo for the best flavor.
  • Check the ingredient list for whole-egg mayo; it will list whole eggs or whole egg yolks near the top (not just “egg yolks” or “egg substitutes”). Whole egg mayo is creamier and richer, with a smoother texture.
  • Ketchup: Contributes sweetness, acidity, and a fry sauce taste. Look for one with real sugar (not high fructose corn syrup) for the best flavor.
  • Pickle juice: For the best flavor, use juice from bread-and-butter pickles for a sweet-tangy punch rather than a salty dill bite.
  • Spices: Paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, ground mustard, salt, and pepper create a flavorful blend that brings smoky, savory depth and balance, while a touch of cayenne elevates all the flavors. Use more or less to taste.

French Fry Dipping Sauce TIPS

  • Use high-quality ingredients: Good mayo and ketchup make a noticeable difference.
  • Chilling shortcut: If you don’t have time to chill the sauce in the fridge for 30 minutes, pop it in the freezer until ready to serve.
  • Make ahead if possible: It tastes even better the next day after the flavors have had time to blend.
  • Season to taste after chilling: Flavors mellow as the sauce sits, so taste again and adjust salt, pepper, or spice before serving.
  • Adjust to taste: Feel free to adjust the sweetness, tang, or heat by adding more pickle juice, ketchup, or cayenne to suit your preference. Some recipes call for up to ½ cup ketchup!

Homemade Fry Sauce variations

  • Spicy fry sauce: Add hot sauce or extra cayenne for heat, or add sriracha, gochuchang, or Asian chili sauce for an Asian flair.
  • Spicy chipotle fry sauce: Mix in chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, lime juice, and a pinch of cumin for a smoky heat.
  • Sweet fry sauce: Use more ketchup or stir in Asian sweet chili sauce.
  • Tangy fry sauce: Increase the pickle juice or add a little vinegar for extra bite.
  • BBQ fry sauce: Replace some of the ketchup with BBQ sauce for a smoky-sweet twist.
  • Relish fry sauce: Stir in dill pickle relish for extra texture and tang.
  • Buffalo blue fry sauce: Add buffalo hot sauce and blue cheese crumbles for bold, tangy flavor.
  • Curry fry sauce: Add a pinch of curry powder, a pinch of turmeric, and a squeeze of lime for a bold global twist.

How to serve Fry Sauce Utah

Fry sauce is much more than for dipping fries! Here are some tasty ideas for serving:

  • As a dip for fries: Serve it alongside hot, crispy potato wedges (pictured), French fries, sweet potato fries, or waffle fries for classic dipping.
  • With onion rings or tater tots: Adds creamy, tangy balance to crunchy sides.
  • For chicken tenders or nuggets: A great alternative to ranch or honey mustard.
  • As a veggie dip: Works surprisingly well with carrots, celery, or bell peppers.
  • Spread on sandwiches/burgers/cheeseburgers: Use in place of mayo or mustard for a flavor upgrade.
  • In wraps or bowls: Drizzle it over burger bowls, chicken wraps, or rice bowls.
  • Grilled meats: Serve alongside grilled chicken, steak, or sausages as a fun alternative to BBQ sauce.

Fry Sauce FAQs

What does fry sauce taste like?

It’s creamy, tangy, slightly sweet, and savory all at once—similar to a mix of ketchup and a rich, zesty aioli.

Is fry sauce the same as Thousand Island dressing?

No. While both are creamy and pink, fry sauce is simpler and usually doesn’t include relish or chopped vegetables like Thousand Island dressing.

Can I make fry sauce ahead of time?

Yes! In fact, it tastes even better after resting in the fridge for a bit so the flavors can blend.

Why is my fry sauce too runny?

This usually happens if too much liquid (like pickle juice) is added. Simply stir in a little more mayo to thicken it up.
